A paper animation can look perfect in the studio and still lose its edge after two more encodes. The export should match the target timeline, protect the subject from interface overlays, and leave enough image data for fibers, folds, and small type to survive platform compression.

USE PORTRAIT AS THE DEFAULT

TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are built around a vertical 9:16 canvas. Use 1080 x 1920 when the device and browser can complete the export reliably. The format gives the paper edge enough room to travel and keeps a full-frame portrait readable without a second crop.

A 720 x 1280 export is useful for a quick test or a constrained device. It keeps the same shape and timeline, yet fine fibers and small type will soften sooner. Approve composition at the target size before deciding whether a lower-resolution test is enough for a production file.

Keep the source crop consistent between the studio and the destination edit. A platform may display the video inside a different viewer frame, yet the exported canvas should remain the deliberate 9:16 composition. Extra padding or a baked border makes the paper feel smaller and gives the uploader less room for captions.

MATCH THE FRAME RATE

30 FPS is the reliable starting point for a short social insert. It matches many phone-shot timelines and keeps the file size manageable. Use 60 FPS when the surrounding edit is 60 FPS or when a fast paper edge benefits from more samples. Matching the timeline prevents duplicated frames or a conversion step that can change the feel of the motion.

Frame rate cannot fix a poorly timed transition. Watch the paper at quarter speed and confirm the edge has enough frames to travel smoothly. If it jumps at 30 FPS, add time or simplify the move before doubling the frame rate.

Use 60 FPS for a reason that can be seen. It is useful for a quick tear, a small fiber edge, or a surrounding 60 FPS sequence. It increases the work for the browser encoder and the file, so it should be an intentional project setting rather than a default badge.

LEAVE ROOM FOR THE UI

Keep the main face, product, logo, and headline in the central safe area. Treat the top 150 pixels, right 140 pixels, and bottom 320 pixels as flexible space for platform UI and captions. Background paper can reach every edge; the information that makes the shot useful should stay inside the middle.

Preview the final frame with a simple safe-area overlay while composing, then remove the overlay before export. The overlay belongs to the working view and should never become part of the video.

Read the headline from the distance of a phone held at arm's length. If the first line is too close to the bottom caption zone, move the type before export. A paper margin can be wide and still feel safe when the information sits in the central column.

KEEP H.264 SIMPLE

For broad compatibility, export an MP4 using H.264 High Profile, yuv420p, and fast-start metadata. A target around 8 to 12 Mbps gives textured paper enough room at 1080 x 1920. The exact bitrate depends on the editor and platform, so use the first upload as a field check rather than treating one number as universal.

Avoid an unnecessary GIF step. GIF removes color depth, inflates the file for a short clip, and can turn paper fibers into banding. Use MP4 for the working video and add platform-native audio after the visual export.

Keep fast-start metadata enabled when the editor offers it. It helps a browser or social uploader begin playback sooner, though it does not change the visual quality. The important quality controls remain the dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, and source crop.

CHECK THE FIRST AND LAST FRAME

A black first frame, a leftover paper corner, or a final crop can make a finished template feel unfinished. Scrub the exported file from frame one through the last hold. Check that the Before image is complete before the tear begins, that the After image is complete after the tear ends, and that a newspaper headline remains readable at phone scale.

Use a frame extraction tool or the editor's frame-step control when a problem is hard to see in playback. A frame-level check is especially useful for fast transitions because a one-frame flash can disappear at normal speed and reappear after platform compression.

For Torn Paper Wipe, sample the frame immediately before the tear, the middle of the fiber edge, the first complete After frame, and the last hold. For Newspaper Highlight, sample the headline landing and the marker end. The sample points follow the job of each template.

RUN A MOBILE UPLOAD TEST

Upload a private or draft version on the target platform and watch it on the phone you care about. Check the crop, paper contrast, caption overlap, sound start, and first-second hook. Desktop playback can hide a soft edge or a UI collision that becomes obvious on a small screen.

Xiaomi 13 Chrome is part of the current device check for these browser studios. A template earns a production label after the local preview, browser export, downloaded MP4, and mobile playback all agree about the same final image.

A private upload is enough for this pass. It lets you inspect the platform crop and compression without committing a public post. Save the uploaded draft beside the local MP4 when comparing a material change, because memory is a poor measure of a one-pixel edge or a small color shift.

PUBLISHING CHECKLIST

Keep one export checklist next to the project. It prevents a good paper animation from being weakened by a mismatched timeline or a second crop. Run it after the file has been encoded, because the platform sees the encoded file rather than the in-browser canvas.

The checklist should take less than a minute for a short clip. The goal is a repeatable gate before posting, not another editing stage. When a render fails, keep the failed file and metadata long enough to identify the pattern before trying a different setting.

  • 1080 x 1920 or a deliberate 720 x 1280 test.
  • 30 FPS or a deliberate 60 FPS match to the edit.
  • H.264 MP4, yuv420p, with no unexpected rotation metadata.
  • Subject and headline clear of top, right, and bottom UI zones.
  • No black frames, duplicate frames, edge flashes, or leftover overlays.
  • Private mobile upload checked before public posting.

A VERSIONING STRATEGY FOR SHORT CLIPS

Export one composition in a small matrix rather than changing everything between attempts. Start with 1080 x 1920 at 30 FPS, then compare 720p or 60 FPS only when the first version has a clean crop and a stable edge. This isolates the effect of each output decision and keeps the visual review understandable.

Use a file name with the template, source role, resolution, FPS, seed, and version. For example: torn-wipe-after-v3-1080-30-seed3817.mp4. The exact naming style can be yours; the important part is that a downloaded file still explains how it was made after it leaves the browser.

When a platform upload looks different, compare the local MP4, the editor export, and the private platform draft in that order. The first file that changes identifies the layer responsible for the difference. That sequence is quicker than re-rendering the paper animation without knowing whether the issue began during upload.

Keep the original browser export until the post is approved. A platform may create its own preview file, while the local MP4 remains the clean source for a different crop, a new sound, or a second platform. This is especially useful when the same paper animation needs separate TikTok, Reels, and Shorts uploads.

If the final file is larger than expected, inspect the duration and dimensions before reducing quality. A short 1080 x 1920 clip should remain manageable. A hidden duplicate track, an accidental long hold, or a second export at a larger canvas often explains the size more clearly than a bitrate change.

For a library workflow, keep one approved export preset per destination instead of tuning each file by feel.
